Insomnia

Jolena has insomnia (in-SAWM-nee-ah),
Her eyes can never close.
This means the girl can’t sleep at night.
Not even can she doze.

Jolena can’t sleep. She’s very tired. She has tried everything she has heard for how a person can sleep at night.

Getting out in the fresh air every day.

Drinking a nice cup of warm milk at bedtime.

Turning off the TV and all other devices at least 30 minutes before going to bed.

Taking a nice, warm bath at bedtime.

Counting sheep.

Reading a very boring book in bed.

Nothing has worked.

Finally, Jolena asked Mandy why she seems so rested when she gets out of bed in the morning.

“It’s very important to get a good night’s sleep,” Mandy told her.
“But I can’t sleep at all!” Jolena cried. “I just stare at the ceiling all night.
Mandy looked puzzled. “How can you stare at the ceiling all night if you’re wearing your sleep mask?” she asked.
“Sleep mask?” Jolena asked. “What’s a sleep mask?”
Mandy looked around  in the girls’ clothes basket and pulled out a soft piece of blue fabric with lace all around the edges. “This,” she said, “is a sleep mask. We each have one.”

“Children can’t sleep if they don’t close their eyes,” Mandy went on. “Dolls can’t sleep if they can see,” she explained. “Many dolls have eyes that close when they lie down. That can be a problem if they want to read in bed…

…or watch the clouds up in the sky.”

“Our eyes are always open, so we can see to do those things,” Mandy went on. “It’s why you can do somersaults in the air on your skis and see where to land. You will need a sleep mask to sleep, though.” Mandy dug around again in the clothes basket.

She found another sleep mask, so they each had one.

Jolena had insomnia,
Her eyes would never close.
This meant the girl could never sleep.
Not even could she doze.

But fashion has a cure for this!
A sleep mask for her eyes.
This means she now can sleep at night.
So rested she can rise.

Just a peek to say, “Thanks Mandy!”

Now Jolena can get a good night’s rest each night and wake up each morning ready for the day’s adventures.

Goodnight, Jolena! Sleep well!

A Picnic by the Lake

Charlotte and Jolena decided to go to the lake for a picnic and a pretend swim. They made their own lunch: peanut butter and jam sandwiches.

(The Writer was surprised that Charlotte managed to spread the peanut butter with such a big knife.)

While Charlotte made the sandwiches, Jolena wrapped them in paper.

They added a box of raisins for dessert. One napkin was enough for both of them, because it was so big.

They packed their food in the picnic basket and grabbed their chairs and towels. Then The Writer drove them to the lake, where they found a nice spot on the dock. "This is perfect," Jolena said, as she settled into her chair.

"We'll pretend to eat now, and then we can pretend to swim," Charlotte said, as she picked up the picnic basket to hand out the sandwiches. (You don’t have to wait to swim after you eat, if you’re just pretending.)

"Eat your sandwich, Jolena," The Writer said.
"But you're watching. I can't open my mouth while you're watching."

"Yum! I love peanut butter and jam!" Charlotte said happily. "Why aren't you eating, Jolena?" she asked.
"She's still watching!" Jolena replied.

"Mmmfgh!" Charlotte said, talking with her mouth full of sandwich. When she had pretended to swallow, Charlotte looked around. "It isn't a picnic without ants," she pointed out.
"Oh, but we will have ants," Jolena replied. "I invited Ant Martha and Ant Mathilda."
"We have aunts named Martha and Mathilda?" Charlotte asked.
"No, silly! Ant Martha and Ant Mathilda! Here they come now, and they've brought their own lunch."

We'll leave them all to it, so Jolena and the ants can eat. Charlotte is almost done with her sandwich.

Skiing in Summer?

Jolena's a young girl
Who adores the sky,
So much, in fact,
She's learned how to fly.

Over and over,
Like thread from a spool,
Until (with a splash)
She lands in the pool.

Jolena is learning freestyle skiing and has been training at the Olympic Park this summer. Freestyle skiing is a set of winter sports where skiers do fancy tricks in the air before landing.

Here's what she looked like when she came home on the last day of her first week of training. She was so tired.

How can you ski in summer? You could get on a plane and fly to another part of the world, where's it's cold. That isn't really skiing in summer, though, because it's winter there when we have summer. You could go there to ski, but it costs a lot of money to travel far away just to practice skiing, especially for children, who are just learning--or for dolls, unless they're on a team. Besides, Jolena didn't want to have to get back into her box to travel, and she didn't want to go alone.

Instead, children (and dolls) who are learning to ski freestyle can practice in the summer where there is a swimming pool at the end of a steep ramp. There's no snow in the summer, so the ramp is carpeted with a special kind of plastic grass, with the blades all facing downhill. It feels just like skiing on snow, but it isn't cold. The pool is there to land in, so the skiers don't get hurt.

Today Jolena's sisters came to watch practice. They sat together on the bleachers.

They brought their water bottles, because it's hot outdoors. They didn't need sunscreen because the bleachers are in the shade...and because they're made of something called vinyl. They could melt if it were hot enough, but they don't get a sunburn, and it never gets that hot where they are.

Charlotte, Mandy and Veronika watched as Jolena came down the ramp, faster and faster. Then, at the end of the ramp, Jolena flew up into the air.

While her sisters watched anxiously...well, two of them watched...

Jolena crossed her skis and did a flip in the air...

coming down to land, skis-first, in the pool.

When training was over, Jolena came to find her sisters in the bleachers.

Veronika asked, "Weren't you scared?"
Mandy said, "You're so brave!"
Charlotte said, "I missed it because I was afraid to look!"

"The hardest part is getting out of the pool with skis, ski boots, poles and a helmet," Jolena explained. "We have lots of training before we get to jump into the pool. We take gymnastics and use ropes, always with a teacher to show us how. We have to be good at swimming and diving, too, because we go into the water. Some of us take dance lessons to improve our balance and help us look good when we do our tricks."

Jolena has a good teacher to show her how to do tricks in the air. Dolls can be hurt or damaged if they fall from way up high and don't land right. So can real girls and boys.

You can practice drawing when you're alone or you can let another child teach you.

You can get a glass of water by yourself. It might make a mess, but a mess can be cleaned up.

Some kinds of practice need human grownups to help, so you don't get hurt. Like flying.

What Do Dolls Do on Their Day Off?

What do dolls do when we aren't home? What are they up to when we're away? They can't just stand in your room and stare at the walls. Wouldn't that be boring?

Maybe they stay in their pajamas all day.

Or maybe they sleep while we're gone.

Do they get together and read a book? Do they imagine they're having adventures?

Maybe they watch TV all day.

Do they play with their toys?

Or do they play games with each other?

Or do they they play with your toys?

Maybe they go into the kitchen and make some hot cocoa...

Or banana-oat waffles...

Or do the dishes.

Would they have a tea party?

Maybe they try on your clothes.

What if they tried on your mother's clothes?

Maybe they find your mother's purse.

Maybe they even find your mother's credit card and buy some things for themselves online while you're gone!

Maybe they go for a hike in the woods.

What if there's a bear in the woods?

They could invite the bear into the house for a snack, couldn't they?

Maybe there's a bear in your house right now!

Or maybe they just sit patiently, right where you left them, waiting for you to come home and play with them.

What do you think your dolls do while you're away?

Rules for Success

"The game stopped being fun after Sarah changed the rules," Charlotte said, as Mariah sat down on the steps. "I think so, too...
