Best Buds

Emil and Billy are best buds. They are buddies, through and through!

They have been best buds ever since Emil came to live with Billy and his sisters. The girls are Emil's sisters, now, too, of course, but Billy was the one who showed Emil around.

None of the dolls minded that Emil couldn't see much of anything or hear anything at all, except their voices in his head without his special glasses. (Dolls talk to each other in their heads, you know, because they can't move their mouths.)

Billy was very helpful when Emil came to live with him. He helped him find a place to plug in the special alarm clock that shook the mattress when it was time to get up.

To show Billy how his alarm clock worked, Emil set it for just a few minutes from the time it was. The two boys lay in bed and waited. When the mattress started to shake, the two boys looked at each other and giggled.

Billy helped Emil plug in the charger for his special glasses, too.

Billy woke Emil that time when the smoke alarm went off, which would have saved him if there had been a real fire. Emil's special alarm clock doesn't know when there is smoke in the house.

Billy and Emil do a lot of fun things together.

They enjoy riding the dolls' bicycles on the trail. Neither one of them minds that two of the bicycles are girls' bikes and two of the helmets are pink. They think any doll who even has a bicycle to ride is lucky, and you can't ride a bicycle without wearing a helmet. It isn't safe. They don't mind that their bicycles have training wheels. They know it's difficult for a doll to ride a bicycle without training wheels, even when they have been riding bicycles for a long time.

They find other interesting things to do, like fishing. They never catch anything, but that isn't always the point of fishing, is it?

They enjoy working on a puzzle or putting Legos together.

Every so often, they measure each other to see if they have grown any since the last time they had measured. It was strange, they thought. They are both the same height, and they never seem to get any taller.

They help each other get cleaned up when there is a party or they plan to take photos of everyone.

Billy and Emil came to the family with different beliefs, but they share what they believe with each other and with the girls. They know that it doesn't mean that what you believe is wrong for you just because someone else believes something different. Each boy thinks his friend is more interesting because some of the things he thinks and believes are different. They respect each other.

They respect the girls, too. They play together nicely and treat the girls the way they would want to be treated, even though the girls are different.

Emil and Billy thought getting wigs was very important, because they wanted to look like real boys, not dolls with rooted hair someone cut off. They got their new hair together at the same time.

They brush their hair when they have to, not because it's fun. Aside from getting their wigs and dressing warmly enough, Emil and Billy don't worry much about their hair and clothes. Those things seem much more important to the girls.

The boys discovered that the games the girls play together were fun for boys, too, like Jumprope and hopscotch. You just have to learn how, and the girls taught them.

The girls like to climb trees, just as much as Billy and Emil. Jolena is really good at climbing trees. She isn't afraid of being up high.

The girls like to play with the Frisbee. The Frisbee isn't just for boys.

Sometimes they all play basketball together. Basketball is better with a bunch of kids. They all encourage Pippa, even though basketball is difficult for her. The other dolls have been helping her practice in the workroom. She is getting pretty good at getting the ball into the basket when it's her turn for a free throw.

The boys taught the girls how to use their skateboard.

Now that the girls have practiced, it's just as easy for them as it is for Billy and Emil.

The boys are happy they have sisters. They have a lot in common with them, but it's interesting that they are different and the girls are helpful when Emil and Billy need to learn something new.

Jolena is teaching the boys how to cook. They are very careful with the knife and the stove, because Jolena taught them that knives and stoves can be dangerous if you don't use them correctly.

Mariah helps the boys learn better ways to study for tests, to do their homework or how to figure out crossword puzzles. She never does it for them; she just gives them ideas and asks them questions, so they figure it out for themselves.

If Emil or Billy or anyone else has a problem with another doll, he (or she) can talk it over with Veronika. It helps to talk things over with someone who understands, especially if your feelings are hurt. Sometimes Veronika just helps you understand the other person. It always helps you feel better.

If the boys have a question about how the world works, they can ask Mandy. Mandy knows a lot about science. Science is amazing, and there's so much of it!

Charlotte entertains all the dolls with her music. Emil is happy he has his special glasses. He can hear the other dolls' voices in his head, but he can't hear music without his special glasses.

Pippa is fun. She makes you think about things because she has so many questions. Pippa is always willing to try something new. That makes all the dolls, even Pippa, laugh.

The boys think their sisters are their best buds, too!
