Homesick

“I wish we could have brought our bicycles,” Billy said, as the boys stood and looked out the window at the campground.

“Yes,” Emil replied. “This would be a perfect place to ride, but The Writer said they take up too much space. When you go camping, even with a trailer, you have to limit what you take.”

“It’s fun to ride the bikes,” Billy sighed wistfully.

Emil had to agree. “I hope we’re home in time for summer,” he said. “Riding through the woods on our bikes is one of the best things about summer.”

“The girls said there’s a lot of snow at home right now, so we couldn’t have used our bicycles at home,” Billy pointed out.

They had talked on the phone each week with the dolls who were still at home.

“No, but we could have used the sled,” Emil reminded him. Taking the sled out in the snow was almost as much fun as riding the bikes.

“I miss sitting in front of the fire with everyone,” Billy said.

“You know what I miss?” Emil asked. Without waiting for Billy to answer, Emil said, “I miss watching Jolena’s competitions on the TV with the rest of the dolls.”

Billy nodded. He knew that was fun.

“I miss doing experiments with Mandy,” Billy said. “It's fun to learn new things!

“Yes,” Emil agreed, “and having Mandy help us look up things, so we understand how the world works. She really knows how to get information out of the computer!”

“I miss being there when Jolena comes back from a trip,” Billy said. “She always has photos of interesting places and animals and things we don’t have at home.”

“I miss putting together our puzzle,” Emil said. “We should have brought it along.

“I miss having Mariah help us with our homework,” Billy added. “She doesnt do it for you, but when you finish it, you understand what you were supposed to learn.”

“I even miss having Pippa ask me to tell her what her bear wants to say to her,” Emil added.

“I miss hearing Charlotte practice her violin,” Billy said.

“Remember when we went out to the woods to watch the plane take off?” Billy asked. “That was fun!”

“Yes,” Emil agreed. “I miss cooking with Jolena and then pretending to eat what we cooked.”

“I miss our family meetings,” Billy told him. “I like how everyone listens to you when you tell them what you think.

“I miss watching the animals play,” Emil replied.

“And I especially miss looking after Brownie!” he added. I know the girls are taking good care of her, though.

“Well,” Billy went on, “I miss walking the dogs with Charlotte. “Spring will be here soon, and it will actually be nice outside walking the dogs.”

I miss helping The Writer clean the house,” Emil said. “It’s fun to give Pippa or Pauly a ride on the robot vacuum!”

“Do you know what?” Billy asked. “I even miss getting into trouble at school!”

Both dolls thought about that for a while.

“At least we aren't lying in a box in the post office,” Emil said, “waiting for someone to come get you and let you out. That would be boring!” Both boys remembered being in their boxes, waiting to be let out. It's how dolls are sent from one place to another. They can't just get on a plane, which would be fun. You don't have a flight attendant serve you milk and cookies you can pretend to eat. You don't get to look out the window at the ground below.

You just lie there or stand there in your box, motionless, until you arrive at your new home and someone lets you out.

“You boys are homesick, aren’t you?” the boys heard The Writer say. She had been listening from where she was in another part of the trailer. “What you need is something to look forward to. I will have a surprise for you––for all of us––when we leave here. I’m not going to tell you what it is now, so you will have to wait and see.”

Both boys wondered what “homesick” was. They looked at each other.

“We’ve been missing home,” Emil said. “That must be what homesick is.” That made sense.

Suddenly both boys jumped up. “I wonder what the surprise is,” Billy said, surprised that he wasn’t homesick anymore.

Emil realized that he wasnt homesick, either. He was excited!
