Stories about dolls who live in our world. Although these stories are suitable for children, they should check with their parents before reading and always be careful online. Readers are invited to donate to a charity supporting pediatric cancer treatment and research. Images shown are taken by the author or from a free image website with attribution and appreciation. Together

"I wasn't here for most of the year," Emil said one day in early January. "What did all of you do together before I came?"

The dolls were sitting around the fire, because it was cold out. They all thought back over the past year.

The first big event they thought of was Veronika's birthday, which will be coming up again soon.
"Veronika's birthday!" Billy said, looking up at Veronika. "That was fun!"

"Yes," Charlotte said. "Instead of a regular party, we made pretend popcorn and put together a packet of food for people who don't have anything to eat."

"We each brought something to go in it," Jolena added, "instead of a present for Veronika. It's what she asked for for her birthday. The Writer gave it to a person she saw when she was out. The person was holding up a sign."
The dolls who were at the party remembered putting the food into a bag. It made them happy to help a real person who needs real food to eat.

"One day The Writer was sick," Mandy said. "She couldn't get out of bed to do the housework."

"We were worried that she wouldn't be able to write the story that week," Charlotte said, "so we worked together to do the housework for her."

"That was a lot of fun," Billy said. "I felt just like a real boy, running the vacuum with Jolena!"

"When it was time for Mandy's birthday," Jolena said, "she told us she wanted to donate money to help sick children. We didn't have any real money, but we thought about all the bottles and cans that The Writer paid a deposit (de-PAW-sit) for. We took them to the store to get a refund (RE-fund) of the deposit. They gave us back the money she paid."

"We had to climb up on the bottle and can machines to put the empty bottles and cans in," Jolena agreed. "I got to go into the store to pick up the money, like a real girl."

"We had permission to do that," Veronika put in, "and to send the money to a place that helps sick children."
"We got a thank-you letter from them," Mariah added.

"Another time, we made soup out of matzoh crackers," Jolena said. "It was for Charlotte's special meal for Passover.
"We all did something to help," Mariah added. "It was fun!"

"Remember that day when we came home and found we were locked out?" Billy asked. "We had to wait. It was boring just sitting around."
"We made things out of the paper from the recycling bin," Veronika said.
"Billy and I had to go through the dog door to get the tape," Jolena explained.

"I liked when we put on the play about the fuzzies," Mariah said. "I felt like a real actor!"
"We each had things we had to learn to say," Veronika said, "so we would say the right things at the right time."

The dolls all nodded. They thought the play went well, and that made them happy.

"Then one day," Charlotte said, "the weather got so hot we thought our vinyl would melt, so we tried to find ways to cool off."

"Not too long after that," Billy said, "we helped Jolena make ice cream! We used a special machine. I like machines."

"We played a lot of indoor games together," Mariah said, "like cards or gossip."

The dolls remembered that they played outdoors, too. They played jump rope, hide-and-seek, and hopscotch.

They rode their bicycles and played on the play set in the backyard. They went for hikes together.

"You know," said Billy finally, "We did a lot of fun things before you came, Emil, but I think the most fun thing of all started with your letter."
"I agree," Jolena said. "We didn't know how much we needed you until you came. It started out with the letter. Don't you all agree?" Jolena looked at the other dolls.

"Yes," Veronika agreed. "You said you would like to come live with us. We talked it over together. We all thought it was a good letter."

"Then we voted on it," Mandy said. "Every doll agreed that we should invite you to come and be part of our family."

"When you arrived," Jolena said, "that was even better!"
"That was the best part for me, too," Emil agreed, and laughed.

"Now we have adventures with you!" Billy exclaimed. "Those are the best adventures!"

"Like when The Writer went away for a week and we were all alone in the house?" Emil asked. "We sat around and remembered all the things each of us did by ourselves."

All the dolls nodded. "That was fun!" Billy agreed. "All the other things we did during that week were fun, too."
They thought about it for a moment. Then all the dolls laughed at the same time.

Veronika's Birthday

"Saturday is your birthday, Veronika," Mandy said. The dolls had all come to find Veronika to see about what to do to celebrate.

"We were thinking about having a party," Jolena said.

"Parties are fun," said Mariah. "Parties with cake and ice cream and presents and birthday cards."

"Thank you for thinking of me," Veronika said, "but I had a nice birthday party last year, a party with cake and ice cream and presents and birthday cards. I don't think I should have another party until all of my sisters and my brother have each had a party. Then it can be my turn again."

"But you have been out of your box a whole year since your party," Billy said. "We have to do something to celebrate."

Veronika thought for a minute.

"I don't need presents. I have everything I need, Billy," Veronika said. "I have pretty clothes to dress up in."

"I have play clothes for winter."

"I have play clothes for summer."

"I have toys to play with and books to read."

"I have a warm bed to sleep in at night, and a roof to keep the rain from coming in."

"I have good food I can pretend to eat."

"I have a family to love."

"Not everyone has those things," Veronika went on, "and real people need to eat real food, not pretend. That gives me an idea! Here's what I would like for my birthday!" Veronika said. "What I would like for my birthday is for us to make up a bag of food for a real person who doesn't have a home and food. We can keep it in the car until we see someone who needs it."

"That's a great idea!" Charlotte exclaimed.

"That will be fun," said Billy.

"It will have to be food that doesn't spoil sitting in the car," suggested Mandy.

"Canned food keeps a long time," said Jolena, "but some cans need a can opener, so we will need one of those."

"Crackers and things in packages would be good," added Mariah.
"That's the idea!" said Veronika, "So on my birthday, I would like each of you to bring something that would be good to put in the bag. We can make it up and put it in the car. Then, when we're out driving around, and we see someone who needs it, we can pull over and give it to them."

"Can we make popcorn to eat while we work?" asked Billy.
"I think that's a good idea," agreed Veronika. "We can meet at 2:00 for our party."
Veronika's birthday was on Saturday. The dolls came together at 2:00, as planned. Each doll brought something.
Jolena brought a can of tuna.

Mariah brought a can of green beans.

Charlotte brought a package of crackers with peanut butter.

Billy brought a can of black beans.

Mandy brought a bottle of water and a granola bar.

Veronika brought a can opener, a plastic fork and spoon, and a napkin.

The dolls arranged everything in a big bag so it would fit.

"I have one more thing to add," Veronika said. She held up a card. "It's a note that says, 'We made this for you because we care about you. Be well.'"

"That's a great idea," Mandy said.

The dolls put the note into the bag with the food and other things.
"I brought something extra," said Billy, putting a big bag onto the table. "We can keep this with the bag of food. Yesterday I saw a man sitting by the parking lot at the store. He had a dog with him. The dog was wearing the man's coat. The man probably shares his food with his dog, too. Dogs need dog food, not people food."

"That's a wonderful idea, Billy!" Charlotte cried. "We can keep the bag of dog food with the bag of people food, and if the person has a dog, we can give them food for the dog as well!"
When they had everything ready to go into the car, Veronika looked around. "I had a wonderful birthday last year," she said, "but I think this one has been even better. Thank you, everyone!"

Then they went to watch a movie together on the TV. Billy brought the popcorn.

Here are some other things that can go into a package for a real person in need:
bottles or cartons of juice or shelf-stable milk
packages of raisins or other dried fruit
packets of nuts
toothbrush and toothpaste
envelopes of wipes
a list of homeless shelters and soup kitchens
a pair of mittens, a hat or a space blanket
Can you think of anything else?
