Caring for Pets––A Poem

Charlotte has a little dog.

Pierre is white as snow.

When Charlotte goes to school each day,

He's not allowed to go.

The dolls must take their dogs for walks,

As real dog owners do,

Pierre and Freckles, side-by-side,

Charlotte and Billy too.

Brownie is a little horse,

She lives inside with us.

The dolls can ride her, taking turns,

Then clean her with a brush.

She likes to go outside to graze,

Just as real horses do.

For Brownie, though, it’s just pretend,

But she can do that, too.

Cleo is a little fish.

Her bowl's a paperweight.

Veronika feeds her each day

She doesn’t need a plate.

The water must be changed each week,

Although it isn’t real.

Real kids with pets look after them,

That is part of the deal.

Marmalade's a little cat.

He’s Mandy's kitty now.

She found him at the school one day.

She'd heard his loud "Meow!"

She feeds him, he pretends to eat,

She tends his litter box.

But he won’t need his water changed,

He doesn’t go for walks.

Real pets need some care each day,

What kind, it all depends.

They all need food and exercise,

And this need never ends.

They need a vet if they get sick,

A home where they can stay.

For some pets there are tags required

And rules you must obey.

They don’t wait on a shelf for you,

Until you want to play.

You care for them and they for you,

It doesn’t go away,

For all their lives, they'll need your care,

And they’ll depend on you,

So think before you bring them home...

...if it’s what you can do.
